Sundarban - A Heritage Forest

We are about to embark on a journey to one of the most unique forests in the country. This forest lies on a cluster of islands criss crossed by numerous creeks and river channels. Situated on the eastern coast of India in the State of West Bengal, it is home to a unique community of salt tolerant plants called the mangrove. This is the journey through this amazing mangrove forests. A journey that showcases its unique biodiversity, rich cultural heritage and its resilient local population who have faced the relentless fury of mother nature time and again and yet refused to give up. This is sundarban the largest mangrove forest in the world.

Sundarban Tiger Reserve (STR) was constituted by Government of India under the Project Tiger scheme in 1973. It covers an area of 2585 sq. km. of wich1330 sq. km. is the Core Zone and 1255 sq. km is the Buffer Zone. Considering the importance of sundarban's Biogeographic Region, The National Park Area Of the Sundarban Tiger Reserve has been included in the list of "natural world heritage sites" in 1987 by UNESCO. Sundarban region including the protected area of Sundarban Tiger Reserve was declared BIOSPHERE RESERVE in 1989 by UNESCO.
This unique marshy eco-system is the habitat of rare and endangered mangroves, tigers, fishing cats, wild boars, spotted deers, estuarine crocodiles, water monitor lizards and over 200 variety of birds.
